New California Labor Rule Spurs Higher Trucking Fees

A new California labor law is spurring an increase in trucking fees.  This year California began requiring that companies pay their drivers for time spent refueling, on rest breaks, and other periods.  Trucking firms typically pay per mile driven, and industry groups  say calculating additional wages in California add to the already elevated cost of moving freight in and out of the state.  Some companies have added a surcharge to freight moving in and out of the state to offset the additional cost.
